#KNXis35 – 35 years of KNX: A success story that Insta has been part of from the very beginning

In 2025, KNX, the international standard for intelligent building automation, will celebrate its 35th anniversary. What began as a visionary idea of a few European manufacturers in 1990 has grown into a globally established standard. Today, more than 500 member companies and over 8,000 certified products stand for interoperability, innovative strength, and sustainable building technology.

This anniversary is particularly significant for us. We have been involved in the development of the standard since the founding of the European Installation Bus Association (EIBA), which later became the KNX Association. We have been actively involved from the very beginning and are therefore one of the pioneers of this technology.

 

A commitment with long-term impact

The goal of the founding members Siemens, Gira, Jung, Merten, and Berker was clear from the outset: they wanted to create an open and interoperable platform for building automation. This platform was to function independently of individual manufacturers while ensuring high quality standards, reliability, and future-proofing. As a subsidiary of Gira, Jung, and Berker, Insta was closely involved in the founding activities from the outset and was thus able to witness the emergence of the KNX standard at close quarters.

This understanding continues to shape our work to this day. Insta GmbH has been represented in the technical committees and working groups of the KNX Association for 35 years now. Through our continuous involvement, we contribute significantly to the further development of the standard. This close cooperation ensures that KNX products meet the growing demands of modern building technology and are constantly being further developed technologically.

 

KNX as an essential part of our portfolio

KNX has been a central part of our product range for many years. This ranges from sensors and actuators to system products. The openness of the standard enables us to develop products that can be seamlessly integrated into a wide variety of building structures. This results in solutions that intelligently combine comfort, security, and energy efficiency.

Our developments in the KNX area underscore this claim. These include advances in secure communication using KNX Secure, new approaches in the KNX IoT area, and ever deeper integration via IP-based systems. These topics show how closely Insta's commitment to innovation is intertwined with the technical possibilities of the KNX standard.

 

A look into the future

Even 35 years after its introduction, KNX remains one of the most important drivers of innovation in building automation. As an active member of the KNX community, we are delighted to continue contributing to pioneering solutions. Together with our partners, we are working to make buildings even smarter, more sustainable, and safer.

What began as a shared vision in 1990 has developed into an international standard. We are convinced that the development of KNX is far from complete and that there is still much progress to be made.
